Web design class over view

This was a very exciting and challenging subject for me. I have learnt website design in college and at cit however i didnt learn enough to be comfotable in making my own. Im still not too comfortable in coding however i have learnt so much in this last semester and i still wish to do more in this feild of design in the future. Here is my custom blog. i have changed a few different features and i am fairly happy with it. Some other blogs i tried to change didn’t work well and the code seemed fairly complicted. But i finally found a theme from tumblr and it worked out nicely.

Having to make do.

Some of the imagery i put into my design i had to take out just to make my life abit easier. One of these is the clouds overlay onto the background gradient. I really reckon it looks so much better however i wasn’t sure how to put it in and i didnt want to put a background image in. Another is the lense flare behind the O in the logo.

Website

My website is probably about 65% done. I have had many troubles along the way such as images on different layers, linking, borders, text, positioning and backgrounds. Once i had started creating the styles for the website i had many troubles however many i have learnt from testing different options how to fix them.

My hosting service is bytehost. It is free and i found it through searching the internet. Im still working out how to use it but i don’t think it will be too hard to get my stonefest website up.

Book Readings

Since the last post of my book readings i have read a few more chapters. They have been part 111 in the text book for css presentation. Very helpful book and i don’t know what i would have done without it. The main parts i have been reading and going back to are formatting text in css, colors and backgrounds, floating and positioning. I did a little reading in the 2 week break as well to help me when i had started to style up my html document.

Week 7 lecture

This weeks lecture was how to make up a html website using css. I wasn’t able to watch the entire video in the beginning becuase for some reason the video wouldnt load properly. Once there were four sections uploaded to the unit website i was fine. I have a fairly good idea how to style the page with using css however i know that this video will help extensively and it did. One thing that was different was the design the teacher uses is using a background image and alot has got to do with this to begin with. My website has no single background image, i am using a gradient repeating to save some file download. For my website i am using dreamweaver because this is the program i have been using in the past and have learnt how to use it.

Readings

This weeks readings were on chapters 5 and 6. Chapter 5 gave me plenty of helpful information on marking up text and gives an insight to paragraphs, headings, long quotations, preformatted text, addresses, unordered lists, ordered lists, definition lists, line breaks, semantic inline elements, presentational inline elements, the div and the span generic elements. This chapter is very helpful and I will be looking back on it when I’m putting together my web page because it really helps out in how I want to present my text and what type of text I want it to be recognised as. Chapter 6 was all about adding links and gives an insight to the href attribute, linking to pages on the web, linking within your own site, linking within a directory, linking with an image and mailing links. Again a very useful chapter because throughout any website there will be links and they will always be a big part of web pages.

Week 6 Lecture

This week’s lecture was on web publishing, showing how to publish our websites and what’s involved in doing so. The video explains how the browsers find the servers by the browser sending an address to the name server (like a phone book), the name server then finds the web server where it belongs. The web server produces files that was asked for by the browser and then returns to the browser window. The video also talks about different hosting services and how to apply to one. I will do some research of my own to find what hosting service will best suit me.

Design Draft 2

My final design draft is now completed. I am very happy with what I have come up with and greatly hope I will be able to present it the way I have designed it, once the coding part is done. The garden bed at the bottom of the page is to show a small insight to the UC campus because those garden beds are everywhere at UC. The background shows both day and night sky because the festival runs through the day and night. I have overlayed some clouds in the background but I don’t think I will be able to tile them in so I might have to go with the plain gradient as the background to avoid a large image file for the background. The 3d letters are represented as balloons attached to the boombox in the garden however I will need some advice on how to put the string in under the main content.

This weeks tut we were given a tutorial on how to build a draft design for a website in Photoshop. I already know the layout I’m using for my website however I just need to come up with a nice header/logo.

I was also told about the delicious website which is used to save links to your account. This will be very useful for me because when surfing the net for design ideas there are many helpful sites to use but sometimes I might forget where to find them or the url for them.

So far I have read up to chapter 5 in the Learning Web Design text. I have learnt a lot for web design and where to begin. The first couple of chapters gives background information on website design, structures, browser preferences, different platforms, layouts, monitor colour and resolution. Chapter 4 gives an insight to building a simple HTML website showing the different forms of code and tags to be used. I have learnt a little of HTML from college and CIT. Some of this information I have already learnt however there was a fair bit of information that was new to me and very useful. As hard as it may seem to build a website using code I am excited to start making my own and to learn more.

Week 4 Lecture

In the week 4 lecture I have learnt that working with code provides better results in stability, flexibility, efficiency, accessibility, adaptability, longevity and a better design.

This lecture has given me a much more understanding on why we use code in websites and will help me when I’m making web pages in the future.

All of these websites have some similarity in the way they are set up and presented. Most are music related and are visually appealing. The structure is common with a nice big header at the top, followed by a horizontal navigation and then the content. Some of the issues I want to avoid when making the Stonefest website is to avoid clustering information all in one page, scrolling tabs and inconsistency. Some original contributions I will make to the Stonefest website is the main header and logo, how the information is presented and a more exciting feel to the page than the current one.
